Adventures in Belize

Pelican Beach - Southwater Caye
May 27, 2004

Aah, the beach at sunrise. It's one of the few occasions that motivates Susan to stir at dawn, but somehow the ocean is always worth it. We took a stroll through the water looking for creatures and finding six starfish, a school of minnows, and a few larger fish. We had wandered a bit in the semi-dark the night before, but this was our first view in daylight, and it was spectacular. We toddled around in the sand, playing with hermit crabs and waves, and took a morning dip before breakfast.

Here is our cabin, named Egrets Escape, and here is the path leading from our cabin to the ocean. Wow, huh?

After breakfast Alton took us snorkeling out to the reef and had to leave us to our own devices briefly while he rescued some people who had gone too far out into the reef in their kayaks (they were told not to do that and did anyway).

One of these days we'll scan in some more pictures from the underwater camera but for the moment you'll have to be content with these words. Absolutely gorgeous. It was a real treat to see all the plants and animals.

We spent a lot of time in the water and lounging on the beach. We got quite burned and were expecting to look like the gumbo limbo tree in a few days time.
