I am about to make my first attempt at a hologram and was wondering if someone could give me some some ballpark numbers in seconds for exposure and developing? I will be working with 2.5 x 2.5 PFG-03M plates, an Infiniter 200, a 6mm x -6mm FL. lens, and the GP-2 developer. All the times that I find are like "10x AGFA" and I could probably make a good guess at the exposure time, but I'm hoping someone has used a similar set up and could recommend a good starting exposure time. Also, I've read a lot about "hardeners" and "rapid fixers" and was wondering as to what their advantages are. Are they very essential to producing a good hologram with PFG-03M or do they just speed up proceesing time? Can I get good results with out them? Hardeners and fixers are not mentioned in the instructions for GP-2. If anyone can help I'd greatly appretiate it. Thanks Troy Burnett

Dear Troy,
I have tried your set up and I can give you an idea of what your asking. First thing you need to get manufacturer€s recomended processing information. You can access to that information in 3deep Co. web site www.3deepco.com or contact Alex Cheimets, everything is on the links of Frank€s website. Also about exposure time you can start for 2,5"x2,5" at 2:30 min with GP2 developing time of 15min.

I esposed for 2:30 min and then developed for 15 min, and I have a very dark brown plate. It's still drying, so I'm not sure if I have a hologram or not, but I doupt it. Even the areas where I had a holder are brown, but not as dark as the rest of the plate. What did I do worng? Overexpose? Overdevelop? Too much vibration? Or did I some how manage to fog my plate?
Oh well, there's always tomorrow night. 207.87.132.10

Hi Troy, When using this type of plates and GP-2 you have to expose long time enough to achieve D=0,7. Not Black as you mentioned above. In your case you have overexposed the plate. I'll allso recomend you to Harden the plates before or after exposing. I'll allso recommend you to Fix the plates. Please feel free to ask me for details if you still have some problems to make good holograms with this plates.[ I have achieved better holograms with an older type of Russian developer and Fix] .rorasmu@online.no 130.67.15.242

Hi Troy: I haven't used the Gp-2 developer kit, I use Pyragollol, but you NEVER want to use a fixer with reflection holograms. You especially don't harden you emulsion prior to exposure with a fixer because you'll remove all the silver and you'll not get an exposure or density at all. When you use a fixer with a reflection hologram, it removes all the remaining unexposed silver and shrinks the emulsion, thus your reconstruction angle changes and you get a dark green or even blue image, not gold. I suggest you place another tray between your developer and your bleach. Put acetate acid (stop bath, get at photo store) in the tray and after a 5 min developer time, move the emulsion into the stop bath for 2 min. Wash for 5 minutes, then bleach. This stop bath will remove all developer and make your hologram archival (won't fade). Also check my site for processing 03 emulsions: http://www.3dimagery.com/films.html. There's special agitation involved. The density of a reflection hologram (before bleaching) should be 2. You should barely be able to see your safe light through the emulsion at this density if you are using a 15 watt bulb in a safelight with a #3 filter (dark green). Not knowing the laser output power and the throw distance from your lens to the emulsion, it's hard to give you an exposure time, but I've used a 5mW Infiniter 200 with -6mm focal length lens at 30 inches from emulsion (4x5) and my exposure time was 1.5 minutes. Of course, I'm not using GP-2 either and the developer can make a difference. But please don't use a fixer, use the stop bath and this will also eliminate your brown color effect. 209.122.205.93

Hi, please take a look at Vidar Hegdal's website (Holography in Norway) for some good info. about PFG-03M and diode laser....Good Luck 62.66.239.53

Sir,
I am working with PFG-03M plates using 35 mW He-Ne laser. I tried taking reflection holograms. But I could not get even a single hologram. I have a doubt about the exposure time. I used same GP-2 developer, Hardener and fixer as you have recommended. I exposed the plate for few seconds. Please let me know the approximate exposure time for 35 mW He-Ne laser.
With regards,
