NO! You cannot use a red safelight. At least, not if you're using an HeNe or laser diode laser.

Remember: the laser light is red. Therefore, the film/plate on which the hologram is recorded is sensitive to red light. Red light from a safelight would ruin the film/plate.

In black-and-white photography, the paper is INsensitive to red light. That is, the red light will not cause the paper to change color.

For holographic plates/film, the film is typically sensitive to red light but insensitive to green light.

The best bet is to look at the frequency response of your film and choose a color that the film is not sensitive to, then build a safelight at that color. 207.13.31.68

Use a green safelight - but don't worry too much. I took a hands-on course in Stuttgart last summer where we used HRT plates (http://www.holographic-materials.de/). One of the guys took an exposed, undeveloped plate OUT OF THE DARKROOM, and INTO FULL SUNLIGHT for at least 10 seconds. It still came out perfectly. (NB I don't recommend trying this!) 192.6.76.68

Hi Jason: look at my web site where I have instructions on a very simple green safelight that you could use: http://www.3dimagery.com/safelite.html 207.172.11.147
