Hi I a dueing a project on how holograms work and what they are used for. But other then a few ideas on what they are used for I am commplly stuck. If you could help me with any info pleace do. Thanks

Alex, Holograms have many uses. If you make hologram of a lens it acts just like the lens. If you have a very complicated lens it is often cheaper to make a hologram of it rather than make another lens. This is called a holographic optical element (HOE) and your library reference desk should be able to help you find more about it. You can find an HOE in a supermarket price scanner. Another use is for testing objects. If you make a hologram of a beam then project the real image onto the beam it will show fringe patterns with any deflection. So if I want to see how a hole effects the strength of a beam I can make a hologram, project it onto the beam then place a weight on the beam. This method will measure movment to better than 1 wavelength of light. That would be .000658 millimeters for my laser. This is called Holographic Interferometry or Holometry. Holometry is used in the study of vibration as well and you might be able to find some pictures of musical instruments with the fringe patterns showing the vibration modes.
