What things should I need to know & how much would a good set up cost? Also I've seen Holograms made from movie screen grabs & computer generated images, how would these be made since there is no object to scan?

The cheapest way to get a hologram is to use the book "Shoebox Holography". It allows you to make a hologram of an object. You could undertake this for about $60. To make a hologram from a movie (very simplified) you make a film that has the camera move for each frame so that each sucessive image becomes a sterogram with the previous image. Then you project your laser through the projector and focus the image on a diffusion screen. You move a mask infront of the holographic film for each frame. The hologram you end up with has each frame stored in a stripe down the film. If you really want to try this then I would first read "Handbook of Holography" as they give a more involved description. If you still want to do it then read the references they supply. Computer generated holograms can be made the same way only substitute a LCD for the difusion screen. I took apart an old lap top and use the screen from it. I am planning to make some objects in Turbo CAD 3D and make a movie of them rotating. I am still building hardware however. I figure I will have about $1000 in optics to reduce the image and project it into a line in front of a moving mask. All parts need to be hand made. Although I have heard of using a typwriter carrige. 63.193.192.12

Eric, I don't encourage or recommend anyone to get into Holography. Holography is a disease or virus that will infect you. You will have to put up with derision from kith and kin. You will be awake on "vampire time", you will spend a lot of money, you will get very frustrated over and over and over again. You will make the same mistakes over and over and over again - one of the definitions of insanity. You will wish you never got interested in Holograpy and curse the invention of the LASER - and go right back to it. Run away now! Avoid the siren call. 216.46.36.173

Hello Eric, I am also just starting out in holograpy. I plan to make 4"x5" white light reflection holograms. I have been making a lot of the components from scracth to save money. Like the holders for the laser, mirrors and optics. If you are at all interested in this information let me know. What I have so far is : 1 - laser pointer 1 - 4'x'4'x1/4" metal slab on an innertube 4 - home-made mirror mounts 4 - home-made optic holders 1 - home-made laser holder I have ordered the beamspliters, some optics, GP-2 developer, film, concave mirror. Hey Colin, I have been trying to find an LCD panel for computer animated holography FOREVER!!! It's so obsolete I can't find a good one anywhere. I've been using a 16mm film projector for the time being. But it's time to upgrade. Any ideas Where I can get one? 198.40.30.200

hi all I am really exciting for finding this page for sharing information. I am faculty, product designer in New York City. I have project that consider using 3D hologram projector for visualizing interface. However I don't have any knowleges of hologram making. I really make this work. Please let me know, if you have any tip and sources you can share. I would like to make prototype model. If you want to see my concept go to www.frame29.com and click the "I" Icon. looking forward to talking to you. 12.42.255.77

I am a light artist working in liverpool and i would like to create a holographic projection into space in a gallery... i would like to know how, where anything anyone can tell me on the subject...your help would be greatly appreciated. 213.123.11.100

Hi Amanda, Whenever I hear the term project used with holograms I wonder if it is being used correctly. Just to make sure you understand: The only way to view a hologram is to look into the film. The hologram can be in front of or behind the film plane but you MUST look directly into the film. If you want to see what the best artists are doing try putting "Stephen Benton" into a search engine. He has some great photos of very large holograms. Laser Reflections has some nice work on thier site as well. For a simple introduction link to: http://web.mit.edu/museum/lightforest/holograms3.html 64.167.148.240

I am a student at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena ,CA studying photography. Recently I have become frustrated my the static nature of the still photograph and I am looking for ways to re-invent my ideas.. I am doing some research on 3D holograms... i was wondering if anyone could help me. I've started reading the holographic universe...pretty unbelivable , very cool... what i would like to do is photograph and model...I would then like to project this image in space to be lifesize...this is where i would like to start anyway... can someone tell me what i would need to do this?? thanks a lot eric eric@davidsonimages.com www.davidsonimages.com 24.205.99.83

hello I am product designer and faculty at Parsons School of design in New York. I am interested in using the holography for my new PDA design. You can visit the my web-site for further information. it is called "hive-pda". the diplay and monitor part, I want to use the 3d hologram for this device. I want to have some advice of technical term. If you have any idea, let me know. thank you.
