Polarization

I was doing a little research on polarization and found a reference to Polariscopes, then researching polariscopes I found something very interesting. With a 1/4 wave plate and a polarizer you can see the stesses in glass due to manufacturing (if I am reading it right). Now, I wonder what the orentation of this stress and the polarization of the light (different at the different stress points) and woodgrain all have in common.
