Adventures in Spain

El Escorial
May 18, 2005

After breakfast we headed out to the bus station again and off to El Escorial.

There were a number of gorgeous tapestries and everywhere there were fine details of craftsmanship that must have cost tons in New World gold.

We were a bit disappointed that we couldn't go out into the garden maze but at least we could see it.

Goya?  Originally commissioned for the altar piece, it was moved to a lesser position because it was not to His Majesty's taste.

There were a number of rooms showing how the palace was laid out and built, including several models.

In one hallways there was a series of murals used to teach his royalness aspects of battle.

We decided to have some Chinese for lunch.  It was quite odd to hear Spanish coming out of an oriental face.

Once back in Madrid we dropped by the Reina Sofia but unfortunately they didn't allow photos.  *sigh*.  We were able to get a picture of an oddball sculpture in the courtyard though.

Just when you're feeling all cultured, you run across a Peep Show!

OK, so they weren't exactly grande and they definitely weren't cheap, but we needed a couple of 'ritas to remind us of home.  The chips and salsa were yummy as well.  It was a nice snack to help us recharge.
